Smart Question

I’m sorry to say I’ve never met Miles Lamensky ’14, but he is the subject of the “big picture” feature in our forthcoming issue this time around so you can understand why I feel like I’ve spent a lot of time in his company. Here’s Miles again, in a St. Norbert Times op-ed, waxing lyrical about smartphones. Are they replacing or reinforcing wisdom?, he asks his student audience. “All around me, brains are somehow sliding down the torsos of my peers and nestling comfortably in their jean pockets, now in the form of high-powered circuitry and binary code.”

We caught this on Facebook, where Miles confessed: “I wrote most of this on a iPod touch with wi-fi because I believe in healthy hypocrisy.”

Maybe it’s not so hypocritical. Over on her Facebook page, our chief information officer, Rae Clemmons, is pondering much the same question: high-tech or high-touch – and asking, why can’t we have both?
