Of all the images hung around campus, I think this one is my favorite. The young presidential candidate, the young(ish) college president. John F. Kennedy and the Rev. Dennis Burke, O.Praem., ’26, outside Boyle in 1959. JFK looks so comfortable with his priestly companion, doesn’t he? And Father Burke looks as if he and the senator for Massachusetts have been friends forever. Two great leaders, relaxed in one another’s company. So human.
For more Kennedy memories, check out this beautiful and poignant video featuring Sandy Odorzynski (Economics) the Rev. Andrew Ciferni, O.Praem., ’64 and Ken Zahorski (English, Emeritus). Ken, who met JFK as a student, reads a poem: brief, powerful. (For sheer charisma, it’s hard to choose between them.)
