Happy anniversary to us! A year ago today publications intern Nicole Jagielski ’12 and I launched this blog with a post called – and I believe you can see the full might of our joint creative powers at work there – “First Post.” Actually, I enjoyed re-reading this Feb. 25, 2012 entry this weekend, and still agree with its assertion that College editors may have the best job in the whole world.
I hope you’ve enjoyed this additional connection with your magazine – just one more way to stay in touch with life at the college. From my own point of view – well, here’s the accounting:
GAINS
- Got better at writing headlines (had to happen)
- Linked up a whole lot of stuff that was lying out there, lonely. Truly, the web is a very webby place.
- Tallied 51 posts; five pages; 12 widgets; 238 tags; 13,556 comments currently awaiting moderation. (If you are a real person and your cogent remarks are still adrift in this ocean of spam, my sincere apologies.)
- Heard from around the world. POSTED from around the world: “I Slept Like a Bishop,” “Acquiring the Abbey Habit,” “Crowning Glory,” “Blogging Norbertine.”
- Was completely won over to the idea of a “capstone project” for all interns, and “Eight Weeks In” will show you why.
- Realized all over again how much I like making publications, no matter how modest.
- Completed the suite of publications that make up St. Norbert College Magazine (print edition, online issue, newsletter, Facebook page, blog)
- Got myself a little education in web strategy, and learned how to press a few of the buttons behind the scenes, too – all nice and timely for a summer in which we would redesign the college website.
- Had a lot of fun.
LOSSES
- A few hours here and there on Saturday mornings.
All in all, great preparation for a year that would bring other new storytelling possibilities – those brought through both the web redesign and the (coming) radical rethink of our magazine, on- and off-line. Hang with us through our second year for more on all that!
