A Week in Portraits

Acquired, commissioned, art directed, shot. Swapped. Mooched. A scrapbook of this past week offered in awed appreciation to Bart Colson in Zwevegem, Belgium; Mike Roemer and Corey Wilson in Green Bay; Alan King and Michael Diedrick at the Milwaukee Journal Sentinel; Todd McMahon of the De Pere Journal; and, as ever, the very generous and talented Drew Van Fossen.

Saturday Todd shares the DPJ image of Alex Guild, son of registrar Rick Guild. (Alex, to be featured in the March @St. Norbert, has brought home several medals from snowshoeing events at the Special Olympics in Seoul, Korea.) NFL selects Mike’s image of Donald Driver’s Lambau Leap as one the top 10 photos from the 2012 season. Drew shoots souvenir portraits of the new round of top scholars during Trustee Day.

Sunday Len Liebmann, proud to be our oldest alum by class year,  died today. Nobody loved SNC athletics like Len, pictured with Norby and a younger fan. With Len’s death, we bid farewell to the class of 1936.

Monday Drew was able to grab a shot* of the three architects of the coming Medical College of Wisconsin program in one spot when both Tom Kunkel (SNC president) and John Raymond (MCW president) greeted state governor Scott Walker. Walker was on campus to announce a package of workforce development initiatives that included $7.4 million for the new MCW programs.

Tuesday Corey was on campus to shoot students in our MLS program, for materials promoting our graduate offerings.

Wednesday Drew and Rae Clemmons (new CIO) worked together for an exquisite environmental portrait* of Rae for a profile in our Spring 2013 issue. The MSJ shared an image of Nell Benton ’01, to go with the story of her purchase of a Milwaukee cafe for $100 – that’s $100, no typo. Bart sent a portrait of Frans Debonne, our collector of Praemonstatensia,  and several more of select items from his collection, to go with an extraordinarily interesting feature scheduled for Spring 2010.

Thursday Shoot of the first performance in Dudley Birder Hall, dedicated today.

Friday Drew shot Robert Pyne (Miller Center)* for our first faculty first-person column and a  Navajo vase* for our first Object of My Affection feature. Pyne shoot was a wrap in 10 minutes. Vase, with its quietly intriguing surface (sorry Bob!)  turned out to be a diva and took the full hour.

*You’ll have to wait for your copy of Spring 2013 to enjoy these!
