March, booked

Bookending the month with a few notes on things read, noted, seen, heard.

READ “Six Pixels of Separation” with one of our division’s ad hoc reading groups. Two years after publication, it is amazing how current some of the material is, how dated the rest. Plenty of heady stuff for a new blogger, though.
WATCHED “Miss Representation.” Almost the entire audience for this documentary about the way women are treated in the media (or, barely treated at all once they are past 35) was female, which struck me as odd. Some 200 of us watched it in Fort Howard Theater on campus. When we have presented events about, say, poverty, it has not been only the poor who make up the audience.
READ The Rule of St. Augustine. Words to live by.
NOTED This marvelous story of a man who learned to read in his nineties resonated with me particularly at this time, since I am newly on the board of the Fox Valley Literacy Council.
QUOTED “If you want to go fast, go alone. If you want to go far, go together.” African proverb, a favorite of Bob Pyne (Peace and Justice Center)
WATCHED “Hugo.” For me, this exquisite Scorsese movie turned on one poignant moment. Hugo looks out from high above the streets of Paris and sees, below, all the systems and parts that go into the making of the city. Where so many parts are needed, he is sure there will be a part for him to play also – and suddenly, we find we have been watching a story that is all about calling.
READ The Gospel of Mark, with my Women’s Study Group. I’m more naturally inclined to pick up Luke or John, so it’s good for me to spend some time with Mark’s down-to-earth approach.
GUILTY PLEASURE Lawrence University Percussion Ensemble, heard at the school down the road along with contributing editor Lisa Strandberg and Molly Griffin, editor at Twin Cities Catholic Education System. Lisa plays the marimba, so with her along we enjoy even more these marvelous recitals out of the studio of Dane Richeson.
