When we redesigned our print-issue Table of Contents page we found we needed an unobtrusive way of differentiating the various online extras listed. Headlines were too much, so instead we devised a bolded lead-in phrase (there’s probably a term for it) to signal each item. And then I had to write seven of them.
The Table of Contents is pretty much the last thing we do, print-wise, and by that stage I’m all out of words. “In retrospect.” I wrote. “In detail.” “In her own words.” Oh no. I was stuck in a groove. Repetitive, humdrum – unless. Unless I owned it. “In conversation.” “In hindsight.” What a lot of useful phrases there are that star this tiny preposition! In perspective, in love, in might and majesty, in too deep, in a nutshell, in class, in dubious battle, in all shapes and sizes, in a minute, in the nick of time, in their own world, in step, in a case in point, in line, in shape, in good order, in his cups, in the cold light of day, in all truth, in 1 John 4:16 … In all seriousness, I’m not sure I’ve had enough fun with this next issue’s crop, just generated late on a Friday evening. But here it is:
- In living color: Prospective students meet the St. Norbert college experience, 2013-style (page 6), in this fast-paced video.
- In retrospect: A look back over the careers of St. Norbert’s eight living alumni generals (page 6).
- In pictures: Commencement 2013: a proud day. (Page 9).
- In some detail: John Gordon (Art) and the iconic Green Bay Packers “G”(page 10): a St. Norbert story from start to finish.
- In season: Seems that, as soon as May arrives, it’s time to don, in turn: flip-flops and shorts; a winning attitude (for campus golf and more); a studious air (for Finals Week); cap and gown (for Commencement). Our photographers were there to capture it all (page 11).
- In conclusion: Departing college leaders reflect on their careers in higher education, the lay of the land in 2013, and the challenges ahead (page 13)
- In touch: Marketing maven Dana Vanden Heuvel ’99 (page 16) considers the “mobile-social generation” and the way we buy now.
- In conversation and song: Gerard Edery, a specialist in the music of the Sephardic Jews worldwide, is a master musician himself (page 31).
If there is something here you’d like to enjoy, not too long to wait: The new issue comes out in short order, in its season, in due course – in three weeks, in fact.
