Hi, I’m Hinako. I came from Japan to study English in the ESL course at St. Norbert College. I have had a wonderful time since I came here in August. One of the most memorable events recently was the Coming of Age Ceremony. In Japan, the ceremony is held for new adults to cerebrate and be conscious of becoming adults. There are many definitions of adult, but in Japan, people who became or is going to be twenty will attend the ceremony as new adults in their own hometown. The ceremony is carried out in a solemn atmosphere, and then, they go to a casual party. In the party, they can meet their old friends, and teachers again.
There are some Japanese students who were supposed to attend the events including me, and it was unfortunate that we couldn’t attend. Therefore, our teachers and tutoring student held the ceremony that imitated an original one for us. In general, men wear the dark blue or gray suit, and women wear the Japanese traditional clothing and hair ornament in their hair. Of course, we don’t have such clothing or ornament here, however, they gave us a workshop to make hair ornaments, so we could make our own ornament. We dressed up for the ceremony and wore the ornaments in our hair.
During the ceremony, some teachers gave us a speech, and we all presented our own speeches. After the ceremony, we had conversation with friends while eating pizza and sushi. Thanks to our teachers and tutoring student, we could enjoy the ceremony, and it reminded me to take responsibility for my behavior as an adult. In addition, I felt I should appreciate people who always help me. The coming of age ceremony is important event for us, however, we could attend a more special Coming of Age Ceremony in U.S.! We appreciate our teachers and tutoring students for holding such a great ceremony for us. I will never forget this ceremony.

Communion at SNC has never let me close my fist on my decision to take challenges as an opportunity. No doubt, St. Norbert College is my best fit in all of the aspects.
People say that sometimes the best things in life happen unexpectedly and that is true. Choosing St. Norbert College (SNC) is an unexpected decision but it is one of the best things I could have done for myself.
When I was in my junior year of high school, I had a list of universities and colleges that I wanted to apply to and none of them was as small as SNC. I first went to SNC just to improve my English before applying for other “big” universities. It was a perfect place to practice English as the majority of people on campus are Americans so the only way I could communicate with other people was to actually speak in English. Little did I know that I would fall in love with the school with each passing day. I was welcomed from the moment that I stepped on campus, and I knew from that day forward that I had found my next home.
