In this episode, the main characters of Breaking Bad fail the Bechdel test. Skyler is the only woman present throughout the majority of the episode. Walt is struggling a lot with trying to hide he and Jesse’s business of making meth, and he is also struggling with his cancer diagnosis and treatment. Although Skyler doesn’t have a conversation with other women in this episode, leading to a failure of the Bechdel test, she falls under the typical feminine stereotypes in many scenes. When Walt comes home, she offers to heat up chicken for him to eat, showing off her motherly and nurturing traits of putting others before herself and making sure everyone is okay. She also puts on a face mask and draws herself a candlelit bath to relax, which is also very feminine. The only other time a woman was present in the episode, is when Marie is trying to call her sister and talk about their argument and resolve it by asking her if she and Walt would get dinner with her and Hank. When Skyler doesn’t return Marie’s phone calls, she sends her husband to Walt and Skyler’s house to try and resolve the argument for her. This also portrays her as falling under female stereotypes because she is not being assertive and trying to do things on her own, she is making her husband do the dirty work for her.
