In this post we will be examining Rick O’Connell. In his second appearance we find Rick in a Ciaro prison. The reason for his imprisonment is unstated.

Throughout the scene Rick displays only masculine traits.  The only emotion he shows is anger when he recognizes one of the side characters and punches him. He takes one look and Evelyn and asks “who’s the broad?” soon followed by “I guess she’s not a total loss.”. Rick is angry, degrading of women, and sees right through the charade of missionaries that Evelyn and her companion put on.

Rick upholds gender stereotypes by being aggressive, dismissive of women, and intelligent. He’s displayed as the most masculine character on screen and in this scene presented as the smartest character, despite the audience knowing that intellectually Eveyln should be the smartest character.
