Season 1 Episode 10 of The Vampire Diaries “The Turning Point” analyzed with the Sex Role Perspective
Masculine Stereotype Resisting or Reinforcing
Jeremy drawing, form of artistic creation defying masculine stereotypes by participating in a activity often referred to as more feminine.
Logan Fell, a newly created vampire, is violent and attacking the Salvatore brothers as well as other individuals to assert his power in the community. This shows an example of how he is enforcing the toxic masculinity stereotype by being overly aggressive and physical. However, he still resists the masculinity stereotype by stating how he is contemplating his emotions towards his ex girlfriend. He says “Why am I so overly emotional? I wanna be with her and bite her and stuff”. This uneasiness shows how he, as a man, is not used to expressing his emotions towards a romantic partner, something men are often told in society not to do.
Feminine Stereotype Reinforcing
Once again, the character Jenna is limited to only caring about her ex boyfriend Logan and is only seen in the show discussing his sudden reappearance back in the community. This shows how Jenna is reinforcing the female stereotype that she only cares about a man in her life. Also, Elena’s only concern in this episode is making sure that Stefan is okay with whatever he is doing in his life to help protect others, and there is a seen showing how she finally gives in to his charm and wants to be with him again- despite the fact he’s a vampire.
