This 2018 adaptation of Agatha Christie’s novel of the same name is centered around the murder of a passenger upon the title train. I observed the film’s depiction of it’s protagonist, Hercule Poirot, and how his character aligned with gender displays.

Hercule is a world renowned detective who is described as the best in his field. ‘Murder On The Orient Express’ follows his investigation and ultimate search for justice and balance in the world.

This protagonist can be described as brilliant, artful, polite, and moral. His tactics and overall personality throughout the film are skewed across the items of the Bem Sex Role Inventory, creating a character that falls neither to the completely masculine side of the spectrum, nor completely feminine. Hercule Poirot is a very interesting balance of traits that are stereotypically feminine and masculine. I find that this creates a positive representation of the male mystery protagonist.
