While viewing the 2019 mystery movie ‘Knives Out’, I watched for gender displays of the film’s protagonist Marta Cabrera.

Marta is an immigrant woman who finds work as a caregiver to a wealthy mystery novel writer. The movie unfolds around the apparent suicide of Marta’s patient, Harlan Trombey, and her attempt at covering up her own medical error.

Throughout the film it can be noted that Marta displays the following characteristics: emotional, hardworking, loyal, kind-hearted, truthful, and family-oriented. In all, Marta aligns almost completely with feminine items of the Bem Sex Role Inventory. None of these traits are portrayed explicitly as negative attributes throughout the film, and I believe Marta Cabrera was depicted as a positive example of female representation within the mystery genre of film.
