Season 1 Episode 2
The plot of episode 2 focuses on Ilana and Abbi getting high. After they smoked, they went to a candy store where Ilana bit into a jawbreaker and broke one of her front teeth. Her close friend, Lincoln, is a dentist and they have a relationship without any former titles, but he agrees to fix her tooth. As Ilana is having the procedure, Abbi hangs out in the waiting room, high, and playing with childrens toys. Another patient laughs and asks her how many kids she has. Abbi proceeds to freak out and go to the bathroom to smoke more and yell in the mirror, “Not a mom… I’m not a mom, I’m a grown ass woman… I deserve respect” and keeps going until the fire alarm and sprinklers are triggered. By using the sex role perspective to analyze this scene, Abbi completley rejects the feminine stereotype. Women are traditionally expected to be mothers and in the media it is very common to portray women with this belief. The audience sees that another woman expected that Abbi is a mother just because she is of the ‘child bearing age’ and was playing with kids toys, possibly to see if they were suitable for her own. Abbi had a meltdown and fortified her identity of being an independent woman who does not want kids.
