Does this episode pass the Bechdel Test? Sure does! How so? At the beginning of the episode, Skyler goes back to her old workplace in order to speak with her old boss. She speaks with the female secretary, who says that her boss is busy all day. She goes against the female stereotypes and assertively goes to knock on his door even though the secretary said he was busy all day. Skyler is also consistently rubbing her baby bump, which is an example of a feminine touch. Another scene that made this episode pass the Bechdel Test is when Skyler and Marie were sitting in Skyler’s kitchen. At first, they were discussing Hank, Marie’s husband’s, new tasks at work which this discussion wouldn’t have passed the Bechdel Test, but then they begin to talk about Skyler’s job and why she is going back to work. Marie is surprised that anyone would hire a woman that is almost due with a baby back to work, but then she comes to the realization that money is tight and with Walter being out of work for so long due to his cancer diagnosis and treatments, he hasn’t been bringing an income home. Marie realizes that Skyler is going back to work to help support her family, and she says “Is money that tight?” She then says “You know we can always help out.” which shows off a feminine trait of compassion and kindness. Skyler turns down the offer because she knows that Walt would say that they don’t need help. This episode had many examples of scenes that passed the Bechdel Test and also many examples of feminine characteristics going for and against stereotypes.
