Season 1 Episode 9 of the Vampire Diaries “History Repeating” Examined with the Sex Role Perspective
-
Resisting or Reinforcing Femininity Stereotypes Examples:
- Caroline confronts Matt Donovan after they spent a night together, and she is reading into their situation. Caroline yells at him and claims, “But I do not let guys mess with my head anymore”. This circumstance both resists and reinforces the femininity stereotype. Caroline is resisting the femininity stereotype by being bold and aggressive towards Matt Donovan, but the topic of the conversation is all about her confusion towards their relationship, reaffirming the idea that she is only consumed about her romantic relationships with men.
- Bonnie does not back down about a necklace she has passed down to her that is being chased after by Damon. Bonnie’s assertion towards him and her willingness not to give in shows how she is resisting the femininity stereotype by being strong in her choices.
- Resisting or Reinforcing Masculinity Stereotypes Examples
- Damon, the usual violent and aggressive man of the show, reveals that he wants to have Katherine is alive and is wanting to have her back. While Stefan tries to reason with him and tell him that Katherine manipulated his love for her, Damon laughs it off. This shows how there is a part within Damon that holds strong feelings for Katherine, and wants to reconnect with her. This resists Damon’s typical masculine stereotype by showing there’s a deeper side to him that has standing strong feelings for Katherine.
