Amelia Bechdel Test: Fails

This episode Fails as Amelia’s interactions in this episode are with Derek, Meredith, and the school Field trip that comes to the hospital. Even though Amelia has scenes with many different people all of them are focused on either as a male patient she is working on or her new circumstance with her brother, which makes this episode fail. Even though Amelia was understanding, not subject to flattery, sympathetic, and had a feminine touch which are signs of feminine traits they’re are overcome with her masculine traits which were competitive, being analytical, being forceful, and having a strong posture that is seen in this episode.

Sex Role Analysis

Feminine

  • Amelia is seen as being understanding to other people’s needs as she is very polite to the staff and a patient’s family after she announces a patient as brain dead.
    • Amelia does this by giving the Patience mother time to digest the information along with speaking softly and slowly.
  • Amelia is not subject to flattery as even when her brother gives her compliments, she doesn’t let them cloud her judgment as she is happy where she is now. As they give the tour to the class that comes to the hospital.
  • Amelia is sympathetic in this episode as takes time later in the episode to sit down with her brother to make sure he is okay after everything his experience and that he is in a good place after stepping down from a very important job.
    • Body lunge & Dress: Amelia is more feminine based on how she is seen in this episode as she is seen smiling and her makeup is not out of place.

Masculine

  • Amelia is forceful in this episode as she goes up against her brother as he wants his old job back, which is the job she currently holds. She is forceful by not backing down and standing her ground.
  • Amelia is competitive when she talks to her brother about his preposition of working underneath her. Amelia tries to reason with him as they review their competitive past as brother and sisters.
  • She is dependent on her own beliefs as she doesn’t feel remorse like her other colleagues do for a patient who needs a new liver after he was an accessory to a bank robbery. She states strong with her belief as before she leaves she states that “You pretty much get the hand you’re dealt”
  • Amelia is seeing as ambitious as she was able to multitask her work and her feelings. As the case that was brought to her personally affected her as She witnessed her father getting robbed and shot. She allowed her to focus on her work instead of getting swept up in her emotions.
    • Body lunge & Dress:
      •  Whenever Amelia is shown in the episode, she always has good posture showing that she has power and is not seen as someone who should be messed with. Even when she is arguing with Derek, she stands tall and asserts her dominance.
