Through the first episode of season one of the series Gilmore Girls it was interesting to see how one of the main characters, Rory Gilmore, was introduced to the audience. There were both feminine and masculine traits that I saw present throughout the first episode. However, it was hard to understand right away how masculine or feminine Rory is going to be portrayed throughout the series.

 Feminine Traits:

  • Cheerful
  • Gentle
  • Sensitive to others needs – such as when she was helping a boy find a job
  • Eager to soothe hurt feelings

Masculine Traits:

  • The way she dressed was interesting throughout this episode, viewers could see Rory in many oversized clothes as well as baggy clothing items. While this might be okay in some worlds, others might not feel this is right/correct.
  • Ambitious – Rory was shown being cheerful in the sense that she could go to a private school – Chilton – for the remainder of her high school career. This is something that could help her for another ambition such as attending Harvard for college.

Some other things observed:

  • Rory was seen being more focused on her homework rather than what some popular girls were seen doing such as painting their nails. This could be seen as self-sufficient in a sense.
  • Rory was also seen risking the opportunity to go to Chilton, for the sake of a boy. This is something that can be more feminine.

Overall, I feel that Rory was more feminine in this episode, especially for her gentle attitude to many others on the show. While there were some masculine traits that were shown, I feel that she was more so feminine in this episode. I feel that this could change as she will be put into a more rigorous environment at the private school.
