The image above was taken from a movie poster advertisement for the 2019 film, Avengers: Endgame, which is based on Marvel comic book characters. According to IMDb, this movie ranks in the # 5 spot under the category of the Best Superhero Movies as of 2020.

In order to analyze this poster, we must take away any prior knowledge/backstory and view the poster as just that. Below, the Goffmanian Analysis will be used to analyze the poster:

  1. Relative Size = Again, the vast difference in the ratio of women to men in film posters is evident here. There are 4 women compared to the 9 men on this poster. Similarly to the poster from Avengers: Infinity War, this poster contains characters in a variety of sizes. There are male characters who are significantly smaller than the female characters; however, this poster supports the consistent stereotype that we expect to see women portrayed as smaller than men in advertising.
  2. Licensed Withdrawal = Unlike my most recent post on the Avengers: Infinity War film poster, this one does not contain any female characters making eye contact with the camera. On the last few posters, at least one woman was looking into the camera. In this case, we can see that every single character is withdrawing in some way from the camera. This gives everyone a sense of inactivity here, but the difference between the male and female characters is that this remains consistent with the majority of the Superhero movie film posters discussed thus far.
