Season 1 Episode 11 of The Vampire Diaries titled “Bloodlines” analyzed by the Sex Role Perspective.
Feminine Stereotypes Resisting or Reinforcing
Elena’s emotions have overtaken her after finding a picture of Stefan’s ex girlfriend (who looks exactly like her). This over emotional act of driving recklessly leads to a car crash, causing Damon to save her. Elena is reinforcing the feminine stereotype that women let their emotions get the best of them.
Bonnie continues to work on her magic and regain power in her abilities, and this effort towards advancing herself defies the feminine stereotype by gaining power through her own efforts and working hard.
Masculine Stereotypes Resisting
Damon shows a different side of himself in the car accident incident: compassion and true care about her wellbeing. Damon is resisting the masculine stereotype by taking care of Elena while she is injured. Additionally, Damon takes Elena along on a road trip to find a witch to help him save Katherine. This shows how Damon is still deeply infatuated with Katherine and wants to help her, resisting the masculine stereotype of having to withhold his emotions and not express his feelings.
