Season 1 Episode 15 TVD – “A Few Good Men” Analyzed by Sex Role Perspective

Feminine Stereotypes Resisting and Reinforcing

Matt’s Mother comes back in this episode representing a flighty, drunk woman who has no real compassion for her children’s situations – only her relationship. Matt’s mother reinforces the gender stereotype of women being caught up in romantic relationships with men and having their values only be associated with their relationship.

Elena takes the initiative to find more information about her mother, without any one of her friend’s approval, which shows her stepping out of her shell more and gaining more a strong sense about her. This resists the stereotype and basic understanding of the character Elena, because she is standing up for herself and doing something she finds to be important.

Masculine Stereotypes Reinforcing and Resisting

Alaric finds himself reminiscing on his relationship with his wife Isobel, and this brings back many unprocessed emotions for him. Alaric’s dedication and open vulnerability about his wife reinforces the gender stereotype of men keeping in their feelings and not being open about their romantic feelings.

Damon once again reinforces the toxic masculinity stereotype by becoming overwhelmed with anger and physically assaulting Alaric. Throughout the show, Damon has repeatedly shown himself reinforcing the notion of men believing anger and power go hand in hand.
