Louisa Clarke is the female protagonist of 2016 romantic drama “Me Before You”. Throughout the film, Louisa is depicted as a very feminine character. She dresses excessively feminine, appearing in pants only once throughout the entire film – wearing dresses and skirts for nearly the entirety of its hour and fifty-one minute run time. She has an vibrant taste for fashion, dressing in bright, flashy colors and mismatched patterns. At one point, Louisa states that she had wanted to study fashion in school before her employment at a small cafe.

Beyond her appearance, Louisa exhibits almost entirely feminine characteristics. Her most prominent traits are her cheerfulness and childlike nature. She becomes employed by the Traynor family solely because of her positivity and chatty attitude. She proves herself to be excessively feminine throughout the storyline by behaving sensitively at work. She is tender and warm in her care taking of quadriplegic Will, believing that she can convince him to live by showing him the amazing experiences he can still have despite his disability. She plans elaborate trips and activities, becoming very emotional when Will is denied – such as at the horse race when the venue cannot meet his needs.

As a hyperfeminine character, Louisa is depicted very positively. Her feminine traits are often ridiculed in the early half of the film, but by the end they are her most appreciated aspects and considered to be what make her so good as a caregiver and as a person in general.
