Season 1 Episode 4
The plot of this episode revolves around Ilana being locked out of her apartment on the night of Abbi’s first show as an artist. Ilana’s roommate is gone, climbing up the fire escape didn’t work, and the interaction they had with a locksmith doesn’t go as planned. They end up running around the city in shambles trying to get ready for Abbi’s show. The two girls get in a fight right before the show starts, and Ilana waits outside in tears.
Emotional Vulnerability
So far in this series, Ilana has displayed a lot of masculine traits and resists feminine stereotypes. Seeing her be emotionally vulnerable shows us that she is sympathetic and eager to soothe the hurt feelings of her best friend. These traits are considered feminine on the bem sex role inventory. She explains her thoughts by saying, “I’m like a dumbass, I like can’t function”. Ilana’s performance demonstrates that women of all types can be emotional and feel secure in themselves to cry. This perspective is frequently seen from women in the media, but I would not consider being emotional as a stereotype. However, this did reinforce the belief that women can cry.
