Does this episode of Breaking Bad pass the Bechdel Test? No. Why not? This episode is all about Walt’s healing and going back to work. There are no scenes where Walt isn’t the topic of discussion, and there are no scenes where two women are talking to each other. At the beginning of the episode, Walt is preparing to go back to work as a high-school chemistry teacher. Skyler tells him she doesn’t think he is ready to go back yet. She was being motherly and telling him to take the rest of the week off. Another scene that had feminine characteristics present was when Skyler was talking to her boss. She gets emotional after their discussion and blames it on her pregnancy hormones. This portrays the feminine stereotype of being emotional and kind. She also gets border-line emotional when delivering her speech about Walter’s recovery, and specifically when she mentions Gretchen and Elliot: the couple that offered to pay for all of Walter’s cancer treatments. Although this episode did not pass the Bechdel test, there were a lot of circumstances in which feminine stereotypes were present.
