Not Following Stereotypes

Debbie is a single mom and woks full time. She works as a welder and works all night. Typically we see moms being stay at home moms. On the other hand single moms tend to work a lot and that is portrayed in the media.

Carl is having a rough few days because Kelly broke up with him and he got rejected from West Point. When he goes into work his boss asks him what’s wrong and he expresses his emotions to her. Usually men do not express their emotions to their boss who is a woman. He then takes his anger out on a burglar by beating him with a fryer basket when he tries to rob the store.

Tami is pregnant and she doesn’t know whether to keep the baby or not. Her dad and Lip continue to ask her what she is going to do. She really does not care if Lip is involved in the baby’s life or not. Usually the woman would want the dad in the picture for support.

Going off of that usually men do not want to be involved with a baby when they are so young and do not have a lot of money. Lip really wants to be involved but Tami keeps telling him that she doesn’t care if he stays or leaves.

Laurie is Carl’s boss and she constantly makes sexual comments to him. Usually it would be the male boss making sexual comments to the younger female employee.

Debbie thought she was straight for most of her life, she even had a baby with a man. Then she started to hate and atop liking men after she could not trust them. She eventually comes out as being either bisexual or lesbian. She then tries to kiss Kelly and gets shut down immediately. Women are not usually openly portrayed as lesbian especially when they have been portrayed as straight in the past.

Kelly is attending a military academy in the fall and needs to buy “school supplies”. So her and Debbie go to a military store and get military supplies for school. Usually women do not go to military school especially when Carl gets rejected.

Following Stereotypes

Tami’s dad goes to Lip’s house to make sure that he will be supporting Tami when the baby is born. When Lip tries to explain that Tami does not want him in the baby’s life the dad gets very defensive. This is very stereotypical of a white father to do, to protect his daughter.

Bechdel Test

Fiona and Debbie are talking about how work is going and how Debbie’s daughter is. Since they are both main characters and they are not talking about men so this passes the Bechdel test.

Kelly and Debbie hangout multiple times during this episode and never talk about men, they usually talk about Kelly’s school or Debbie’s daughter. Since they are two mainĀ  characters and they are not talking about men, this passes the Bechdel test.

Fiona and Eliza meet up at an AA meeting and talk about their lives and how they have been. Eliza gives Fiona some advice and tells her to continue coming to the meetings. Since they are two main characters and they are not talkin g about men, this passes the Bechdel Test.
