In this episode of Grey’s Anatomy, Christina Yang has conflict with Dr. Bailey over the fact that Christina erased Bailey’s name from the OR schedule. Christina, not wanting to reveal that she did it to keep her from finding out about Burke’s hand tremor, refuses to tell her why she did it. Bailey punishes her by not letting her participate in surgeries, and making her inspect a patient’s feces instead. Throughout the episode, Yang argues with Bailey about wanting to participate in surgeries. She also says that she should not have to deal with patient’s feces because she is too good for that. In this way, Christina shows masculine traits by being assertive, confident, and ambitious. Also, with these actions Christina also shows a feminine side in that she is showing compassion by protecting Burke.

In class, we recently learned about media effects and how they can influence what people expect of men and women. If people watch this show, people may have less stereotypes about what jobs women can do. Surgeons are typically thought of of being men, so this can show people that it is normal for women to be surgeons.
