For my 16th portfolio post I analyzed a perfume commercial from ralph Lauren. This commercial was for their scent Romance, and it emphasized a romantic relationship between the male and female leads.

  • feminine touch — absent
  • function ranking — absent
  • the family — absent
  • ritualization of subordination — absent
  • licensed withdrawal — present, at 3 seconds, 12 and 14, The female lead seems to be performing licensed withdrawal.

I found it interesting that this commercial focused so heavily on romantic relationships because not everyone has such a positive view of relationships and by emphasizing the importance of romantic relationships they could be deterring some of their audience from purchasing the product. However, at the same time I can understand the appeal that romantic relationships have for much of the population.
