In this issue of Diverse magazine, athletes are featured to honor their award winning scholarships for being student-athletes. The 2020 winners include male student-athlete Rodrigo Blankenship who plays football for the University of Georgia and female athlete Raena Eldridge who is apart of the swim team at Texas A&M University. On the cover of this magazine, two of Goffman’s Gender Displays are present in order to keep the male figure in a power position.

Goffman’s Gender Displays
  1. Relative Size
    • In this image, Blankenship is portrayed in front of Eldridge. This portrays him as more important and the main focus of the piece.
  2. Function Ranking
    • Based on what the two athletes are wearing, gives the idea that Blankenship is possibly in a higher or more significant position than Eldridge. He is clothed in a suit that presents a sophisticated and successful view point whereas Eldridge is in simple athletic clothing.

Something that is also interesting when doing a little bit more research is that although this representation of the two athletes keeps the male figure in a more authoritative and dominant role, the female athlete actually had the better grades on paper, finishing with a cumulative GPA of 3.9 vs a cumulative GPA of 3.65.
