In this 2020 issue of ESPN, professional basketball player Damian Lillard is presented on the cover in very stereotypical ways in which a male individual would be, according to the Sex Role Perspective.

A Sex Role Perspective

Below are the following three ways in which Lillard embodies characteristics that are normally associated with a masculine representation:

  1. The active role in which Lillard plays, engages the audience. This produces a sense of confidence and control that is strongly associated with men.
  2. Lillard’s stance is also strong and assertive. The way in which his body is positioned towards the camera gives the idea that he is dominant. When thinking about how women are positioned, they tend to not be as straight forward, but rather closed off and reserved.
  3. Finally, the action of the “mic drop” that Lillard is participating in gives the impression of success and a major “WOW” moment that he can offer. Men are much more likely to be associated with accomplishment; thus, this metaphor represents the achievement he is capable of.
