There is a news anchor opening on Fox News and Lois gets the job. Brian warns Lois against this because he believes Fox News is corrupted and has a conservative-bias. Meanwhile, Peter works on a new show he’s pitching to Fox, thanks to Lois now working for them, called Handi-Quacks.

Sex Role Analysis:

  • Despite Lois getting a job and working at Fox News she still brings Stewie to work
    • Fox News has a day-care there; typical of workplaces that hire lots of people and have money to pay for the daycare as well
    • Peter stays at home with Meg and Chris, why couldn’t he have watched Stewie too?
      • May be seen as a woman’s first job is to take care of her child

Worth noting:

  • The Fox News anchor:
    • In the beginning is idolized and brings in many viewers because of her good looks
      • Peter and his friends all comment on how sexy she is
      • Objectifying her
    • Fox updates to HD TV and the news anchor is fired
      • After premiering new HD TV on Fox News, the anchor is fired within the first few seconds because now you can see her wrinkles and “imperfections”
      •  The reaction by the Griffins and other families are shown screaming in shock at the look of the news anchor
    •  Can be seen as a challenge to stereotypes: resists the stereotype on how women are expected to look on TV
      • Such a huge reaction for something so little and the quickness of firing her spins it to tell the viewer look at how absurd it is
  •  Goffman’s Analysis:
    • Function ranking
      • Boss at Fox News is a man; secretary is a woman
  •  Traditional Gender Roles:
    • Lois is ambitious- trying out for the new anchor role with little experience before
      • Instrumental Trait- typically associated with manliness
