Quick summary of episode:

The Griffins win the lottery after Peter buys a bunch of lottery cards in hopes of winning $150 million. They soon find themselves to be changed by their newfound wealth, like when Peter loses his friends Joe and Quagmire after treating them poorly due to an inflated sense of self. They end up blowing through the money and end up losing everything. After apologizing to his friends, Quagmire gives Peter money that he invested with him, and Peter is able to buy back the house.

Sex Role Analysis/Stereotypes

  • Lois drops her morals for a ring-
    • When Lois confronts Peter about how the. money has corrupted their family and how she wants to get rid of it, Peter pulls out a big diamond ring which persuades Lois
    • Role schema: viewers may get the impression women will do things for expensive gifts
    • Stereotype: diamonds are a girl’s best friend; jewelry and other accessories are the most important thing

Worth noting:

  • Role Schemas:
    • The copilot of the plane Quagmire was supposed to fly is a woman
      • “Passengers are usually ok with that”; “I once saw a deodorant commercial with a woman pilot”
    • Women in roles that they aren’t typically portrayed in; point out the roles that women don’t usually portray and people’s reactions to them.
  • “Meg as a girl your life holds no merit”
    • When Peter is pretending to be a distant rich dad, he tells Meg that she has no merit because she is a girl
    • Trend throughout history to view women as less; seen in royalty (like Peter is pretending to be) where baby girls are seen as less favorable
  • Diverse Representation
    • Short representation of a male character who is gay and shown watching True Blood
    • Reminded me of the discussion we had about shows that are for women vs shows that are for men, typically True Blood would be considered a show that not a lot of men would watch
