In this 2020 issue, Elena Krawzow became the first female Paralympic athlete to pose nude on Playboy’s cover. Looking through a Sex Role Perspective lens and one of Goffman’s Gender Displays, Krawzow is presented in a very stereotypical way for females to be.
A Sex Role Perspective
- Clearly, Krawzow is presented with very little clothing; if not considered completely nude. Women are normally portrayed as objects to be looked at; therefore, in this case, Krawzow’s body is sexualized in the sense that this is the main focus of the image.
Goffman’s Gender Displays
- Feminine Touch
- In addition to her body being the center of attention, Krawzow is also actively displaying a feminine touch to her body. With her hands in her hair, she is playing somewhat of a passive role and representing that the women’s body is meant to be looked at and felt.
