Season 2 Episode 7

Summary:

Ilana’s roommate, Jaime, passes his citizenship test, so everyone gets together to go on a booze cruise. Abbi and Ilana run into Bevers and they decide to raid the alcohol closet on the boat, but when they go in, the door locks them in. When they all escape, Bevers wants to propose to his girlfriend, and Abbi helps him out.

Masculine Traits:

  • Ambitious: Ilana and Abbi take as much alcohol as they can possibly fit in their hands.
  • Defends own beliefs: Abbi eats some food off of the floor, and Bevers tells her it’s gross. She goes unbothered and brushes it off and continues to eat. She doesn’t care what Bevers thinks and does what she pleases.
  • Willing to take a stand: Bevers plans on proposing to his girlfriend and Ilana and Abbi give some snarky remarks. He is confused and wonders why they did that because “All women want to get married!”. Abbi and Ilana tell him to wake up and ditch the tradition. They express their beliefs and want to put a stop to the traditional ways that society has been.
  • Sensitive to others’ needs (REJECTED): Ilana realizes that she and Lincoln have not been intimate in a bit, but they are still hanging out everyday. She doesn’t want to be dating anyone or have Lincoln as a best friend, and starts freaking out. She could care less what Lincoln thinks and prioritizes herself.

Femimine Traits:

  • Childlike: Ilana starts panicking and yelling as soon as they realize they are locked in. Her mind jumps to an irrational spot and she has a breakdown as soon as the door shuts.
  • Understanding: Bevers panics when he’s about to propose to his girlfriend. He blurted out that Abbi is trans and beginning the transition. She knows that he is freaking out, and she goes along with it for the night to relax Bevers. Abbi knows that it was hard for Bevers to ask his girlfriend and knows that he wants to make it right. She wanted to help him and lend him a hand.
  • Eager to soothe hurt feelings: Abbi goes to talk to her roommate about Bevers and help her feel better about not getting proposed to. She thought that it would happen, and Abbi tries to tell her how much he loves her.

Sex Role Perspective:

Abbi and Ilana think about themselves first in this episode. They show more dominance in comparison to other characters as they do as they please. Analyzing this in relation to the sex role perspective helps us recognize that charachters like Ilana and Abbi are helping pave the way for younger women. They can be seen as fun and outgoing, but also equal to their male peers.
