Background: Resident Evil 1 was created by Capcom Studio and released in 2002. This game served as a remake to the original title that released in 1996, and served as the first installment in what would become a new franchise. The game is a survival horror with two playable protagonists.

Plot: After a series of mysterious murders, a special forces team is sent in to investigate a secluded mansion outside of a small rural town. The team is then attacked by what appear to be supernatural forces and find themselves trying to survive the night in the mansion. Players can choose to be one of two protagonists: Jill Valentine or Chris Redfield. Both character’s stories stay relatively the same with only minor differences.

Bechdel Test: Resident Evil does not pass the Bechdel Test. Though Jill is one of the two optional protagonists, she is only one of two female characters in the game, and the only female member on her squad. However, it is important to note that in 2002 (or especially in the original release) playable female characters were quite rare. In this game, Jill is portrayed just as capable as Chris, and has her own unique personality and voice. Her motivations revolve less on supporting Chris than trying to survive, and vice versa if the player chooses to play as Chris.
