Amelia Bechdel Test: Passes 

This just episode barely passes as Amelia only interaction she has with Arizona who female coworker and they talk about how Doctor Herman is recovering after her surgery. The other interactions Amelia with her boss Owen, and then through a phone as she is working on a case. The main focus of this episode is on Diagnosing and helping a patient solely based on the phone conversation after the city had an earthquake. Based on Amelia’s body language and actions in this episode she is seen as more Feminine. Even though Amelia was assertive, dominant, and raised her voice which are signs of masculine traits they’re are overcome with her feminine traits which were understanding, feminine touch, and affection in this episode.

Sex Role Analysis

Feminine 

  • Amelia is understanding as she knows the kids is scared but continues to help guide her through on how to do CPR.  
  • She shows a feminine touch as she helps soothe Owen but letting him know that he is not alone, and she is there to support him. 
  • Amelia is seen as affectionate as she hugs her boss which ends up leading on to a long embrace. Which then leads to something else as they go on to the on-call room. She is also seen as affectionate when she tells the little girl that her mother is alright. 
    • Body lunge & Dress: 
      • Amelia is more feminine based on her facial features and how no hair is out of place. In parts of this episode, it is almost like she is speaking through her eyes.
      • She is seen having the feminine touch as she uses her had to soothe Owen as they wait to see if the girl from the phone call to be found.

Masculine

  • Amelia is assertive in this episode as she reminds the group and the girl on the phone that even though she is scared she can do what is needed of her.
  • She was dominant when she took charge of her OR.
    • Body lunge & Dress:
      • When she was telling the girl on the phone that she could do it she raised her voice showing she was assertive and held power. 
        • She also raises her voice at Owen as he is hovering over her in her operation
