Amelia Bechdel Test: Passes 

Right off the bat, this episode passes as Amelia’s first interactions is with Arizona who is another female coworker, as they talk about how to prep Doctor Herman for her surgery. The other interactions Amelia is with her female intern who is working on the surgery with her. The main focus of this episode is on Amelia as she does surgery, along with how Amelia copes with the aftermath. Based on Amelia’s body language and actions in this episode she is seen as more Masculine. Even though Amelia was emotional, tender, and understanding which are signs of feminine traits they’re are overcome with her masculine traits which were risk-taking, forcefulness, and assertiveness in this episode.

Sex Role Analysis

Feminine 

  • Amelia is emotional in this episode as she prepares to operate, this is seen as she cries in the bathroom and has a prep talk with herself before going into the washing up.  
  • She is seen as tender in this episode as she does her ritual of her superhero pose before starting the surgery along herself to get a little more confidence.
  • Amelia is understanding in this episode as after all the hard work and being in surgery for 13 hours she allows herself to take a break and let the intern close as she watches over.
    • Body lunge & Dress: 
      • Amelia is more delicate in the first scene she is in as it seemed that she was walking lightly, almost like she is not trying to be noticed.
      • She is seen a shy as she isolates herself in the bathroom first making sure that no one is around before she shows her true emotions, by crying.

Masculine

  • Amelia is analytical in this episode as she is working on saving doctor Herman’s life by taking out her brain tumor. As every single movement she makes could decide life or death.
  • Amelia is willing to take risks in this episode as she takes off her radiation glove to finish one of her tasks, even though by doing so it could Injure herself in the process. 
  • Amelia is assertive in this episode as even after the surgery is done, she continues to look for reasons why doctor Herman is not waking up, which includes focusing on that task until she finds the answer.
  • Amelia is forceful in this episode as she pushes herself, to finish the surgery even though she hits a bump in the road, and then forceful enough to push through once she gets the tumor out and the patient ends up being blind.
    • Body lunge & Dress:
      • When Amelia walks into the OR she has a straight posture, and her eyes on the prize. 
      • She raises her voice on multiple occasions to prove her point.
      • She does her superhero stand, with perfect posture and strong arms.
