Amelia Bechdel Test: Passes 

This episode passes as Amelia has interactions with other female coworkers about something other than a man. Amelia’s interactions with Arizona and Doctor Herman are all centered around the dissection of Herman’s tumor. The main focuses of this episode are on Doctor Herman’s last week before her brain tumor dissection along with Amelia’s preparation and speech for the rest of the hospital on how she plans on doing the never been done before surgery. Based on Amelia’s body language and actions in this episode she is seen as more Masculine. Even though Amelia is gentle, soft-spoken, and stubborn which are signs of feminine traits they’re are overcome with her masculine traits which are assertive, forceful, and analytical in this episode.

Sex Role Analysis

Feminine 

  • Amelia is seen as gentle and soft-spoken in her first scene as she talks with her boss Owen.
  • She is stubborn as she doesn’t want help from her brother on an issue she has, so she goes to his wife to have her ask him. Being stubborn is seen as a Feminine trait.
    • Body lunge & Dress: 
      • More delicate with her actions as she gently takes the coffee that Owen brought for her.
      • She is more seen being thoughtful and supportive as she is with her patient at her checkups, as she gives her a thumbs up. 

Masculine

  • Amelia is seen as more assertive as she puts her foot down and tells her patient that she has to do chemo as it is the only way to reduce the size of the tumor. She raises her voice as she sets her foot down with the patient 
  • Amelia is forceful as she raises her voice as she reminds Doctor Herman that she can’t miss radiation.
  • Amelia is willing to take a stand in this episode as even though her patient is going against her well-guided directions, Amelia continues with her plan of attack to dissect the tumor.
  • Amelia is analytical as she tries to look logically about all the different ways that things could go wrong and how she could fix them if things go wrong.
    • Body lunge & Dress:
      • When Amelia is with a patient, she stands tall. She stands tall when presenting.
      • She raises her voice a few times when she is frustrated at the patient for not doing chemo.
      • She always keeps eye contact, which is seen as a sign that she is in charge and not going to back down.
