In season 5 episode 1 of “That 70’s Show” I examined the gender roles and stereotypes put on the characters by other characters.

One scene showed Red, Kitty, and Eric at the dinner table and Eric was expressing his feelings for Donna through a Luke Skywalker reference. Red responded to Eric by saying that he was sick of listening to Eric talk about Luke Skywalker who was a “fruit”.  Red was implying that Star Wars is not something a man should watch and Eric should not be chasing after a woman.

In another scene, Eric gets a ticket to go to California to see Donna and Fez tells him that he will help him pack because he likes picking out outfits. The other characters shook their heads and the audience laughed because usually, that would be something a woman would enjoy, not a man.

There is a new character introduced named Anette that Kelso met in California and she is blonde and is portrayed as dumb and only useful for her body. This is made known to the viewer when Kelso is trying to get her to sleep with him, but she is a virgin. Later on, he tells Donna and Eric that Anette really isn’t “useful” if he can’t have sex with her. Kelso also says this many times throughout the show that all he wants out of her is sex because she is hot.
