Sex Role Analysis:
- Lois
- She is at home with baby
- Maternal and domestic setting
- Job is to take care of children and home
- Stereotype fulfillment of women as the care takers
Worth noting:
- When Peter tells Lois that he was “raped” and “violated” (not knowing it was just a prostate exam) she laughs at him
- Stereotype that men can’t be raped or sexually assaulted or victims of sexual abuse
- Hard to tell whether or not they are resisting the stereotype or not because he wasn’t really sexually assaulted, so everyone acts like its absurd, but in some regards it is because they know it was a prostate exam
- When Peter tells his friends what happened, Quagmire and Cleveland have also experienced a prostate exam and agree with him on his experience. Joe says that has never happened to him and calls them “queers”, before coming back crying saying it happened to him too
- If men experience anything like that they are considered “queer”, again when it was used as an insult; “feminine” or “weaker”
- Peter’s story in this episode is a very sensitive topic to many. It’s hard to know where their inspiration came from or why they decided to do this storyline. As mentioned before, it isn’t a lot like the absurdist comedy/dark humor they normally do
- They make reference to a film made in 1988 titled The Accused in which a waitress is raped by a group of men.
- The flash back scenes in this episode where Peter, and other men who have had a prostate exam by Dr. Hartman, remember what it was like the scene turns gray and grainy just as it did in the movie.
