The next Justin Bieber song I will be analyzing is “The Feelin” which was released in 2015 on his “Purpose” album. This song gives many examples of stereotypical feminine and masculine traits. The theory I will be using to analyze this song is the sex-role perspective theory.

Masculine Stereotypical Traits

  • Analytical
  • Defends Own Beliefs

“Am I in love with you? Am I in love with you?
Or am I in love with the feeling?
Trying to find the truth, trying to find the truth
Sometimes the heart is deceiving
Can’t get out of my head, I need you to save me
If I am delusional then maybe I’m crazy
In love with you, am I in love with you?
Or am I in love with the feeling? (Oh)”

The lyrics stated above show both stereotypical masculine traits. Bieber is questioning whether he is in love with the girl he is referring to or if he is just in love with the feeling he gets with the idea of being in love with her meaning he is being analytical of the relationship. He is also defending his own beliefs by saying that he needs her to save him. He believes this fact, even if it may not be true.

Feminine Stereotypical Traits

  • sensitive to other’s needs

“You give to me
Everything, anything that I could dream
And at least that’s what it seems
Could it be I don’t know what’s good for me?”

In the lyrics stated above, Bieber is showing that the girl is sensitive to others’ needs. Bieber is stating that the girl gives everything to him, anything and everything that he could dream of. The girl that is being discussed goes out of her way to ensure that Bieber is getting everything that he wants and that his needs are satisfied.
