The next Justin Bieber song I will be analyzing is “Heartbreaker” which was released in 2013. This song comes from the “Journals” album. The theory I will be using to analyze the song is the sex-role perspective theory.
“Girl, you don’t know how I feel (how I really feel)
Since you been away, oh baby
Any chance that you could take my call? (take my call)
If I dialed you today, oh”
This is an example of feminine traits. These lyrics can be related to sensitivity to other’s needs and the trait of compassion. Bieber is stating that the woman should answer the phone for his own sake. Women have compassion and may feel for the man and answer the phone to soothe their feelings.
“So what I’m really tryin’ to say is, and what I hope you understand
Is despite all the imperfections of who I am, I still wanna be your man”
This is an example of the feminine trait, understanding. Bieber is stating that the woman should understand all the past mistakes because of the stereotypical trait of females being understanding.
“Don’t tell me you’re my heartbreaker (don’t tell me please)
(Baby, please, baby)
‘Cause girl, my heart’s breaking (don’t tell me please)
(Baby, please, baby)”
This is an example of the feminine trait, sensitivity to other’s needs. Bieber is stating that since his heart is breaking that she cannot be the one to break his heart fully. Women are sensitive to other’s needs and feelings, so this lyric is in hopes that the woman will feel bad and stay in the relationship.
