The next Justin Bieber song I will be analyzing is “Baby” from his debut album My World 2.0. This song was released in 2010. I will be using the sex-role perspective theory to analyze this song. This song shows examples of both masculine and feminine stereotypical traits.
Masculine Stereotypical Traits
- dominant
- assertive
- analytical
“You know you love me, I know you care
Just shout whenever and I’ll be there
You want my love, you want my heart
And we will never, ever, ever be apart
Are we an item? Girl, quit playin’
We’re just friends, what are you sayin’?
Said “There’s another,” and looked right in my eyes
My first love broke my heart for the first time, and I was like”
These lyrics show that Bieber is being analytical about the woman’s thoughts and what she thinks about their relationship. He is asking what she thinks about their relationship and what she wants. Bieber is also showing his dominance when he says they will never be apart because this is what he wants in life. Bieber is also showing that he is assertive when he says you know you want me and that he will be there whenever she needs him. Bieber is showing that he knows her and he will get whatever he wants in life and within this relationship.
Feminine Stereotypical Traits
- eager to soothe other’s hurt feelings
- gullible
“Oh, for you I would have done whatever
And I just can’t believe we ain’t together
And I wanna play it cool, but I’m losin’ you
I’ll buy you anything, I’ll buy you any ring
And I’m in pieces, baby, fix me
And just shake me ’til you wake me from this bad dream
I’m goin’ down, down, down, down
And I just can’t believe my first love won’t be around, and I’m like”
These lyrics show that the woman is gullible to think that no matter what happens in their relationship, as long as he buys her anything she will forgive him for any mistakes made. Bieber is also showing that the woman needs to fix him because women are usually eager to soothe others’ feelings. Bieber is showing that the woman is going to try and help him because he says he needs help.
