The ninth song I will be looking at is “Kiss You” off of the Take Me Home album. In this song, the guy is fawning over a girl and just wants to be with her.
Evaluating Masculinity
The guy in this song is very passionate and assertive about moving this relationship with this girl forward. He’ll do anything for her just for her to be with him. Take a look at this lyric:
“Oh, I just wanna take you anywhere that you would like
We could go out any day, any night
Baby, I’ll take you there, take you there
Baby, I’ll take you there, there”
This is the first set of lyrics in the song and right away we can tell this guy knows what he wants. He is confident that this is the girl he wants and will do anything to get her.
“And if you, you want me to
Let’s make a move”
I wanted to pull this little lyric out because I thought it really stood out in this song. He’s asking this girl if she wants to, they can move forward. Very cool! Unfortunately, I think this lyric gets overshadowed by all the other lyrics. For example:
“Yeah, so tell me, girl, if every time we
Touch, you get this kind of rush
Baby, say “Yeah, yeah, yeah”, yeah, yeah, yeah
If you don’t wanna take it slow
And you just wanna take me home
Baby, say “Yeah, yeah, yeah”, yeah, yeah
And let me kiss you”
This chorus almost sounds like the guy trying to guide the girl into saying yes. Very not cool.
Evaluating Femininity
While we don’t get a female perspective in this song, we do get a very interesting lyric about the girl here. Look at this lyric:
“Oh, I just wanna show you off to all of my friends
Making them drool down their chinny-chin-chins”
Now there are a couple more lyrics in the song that describe what the guy thinks about her physical appearance, I think this lyric is very telling. The girl in this setting is just something to be shown off to other onlooking men.
