The FOX television series New Girl, specifically Season 2, Episode 1 titled Re-Launch
Gender representations:
- It seems the episode is all about Schmidt and his rebranding party where the main purpose is about “one man’s functioning penis”. The point of the party is for Schmidt to get back into the social world and try to meet women that he has invited to the party such as the workers from Lululemon implying it is mainly a place that women work.
- The episode seems to focus on sexuality and some gender stereotypes that included nurses and females as well as identifying alcoholic drinks to gender.
- Schmidt says to nick, “only you could make those fruity drinks that used to make the girls lose their minds in college”. Whereas nick does not want to make these saying, all I want to make to drink are things a coal miner would want.
- When Jess is laid off from her job, she wants to be more involved and active, so she asks Schmidt to hire her for the party. He then says that she could be a shot girl and Nick overhears. Nick says, “you don’t have that specific hotness that shame men into spending $9 on a $2 shot. He continues by specifying what kind of ‘hot’ she is by telling her, “You’re the nurse that I want to wake up to after having my stomach pumped. It’s a different kind of hot, still hot”. This corresponds with the idea that only women are nurses.
- Lastly, toward the end of the episode, the second shot girl walks up to Schmidt and says, “there’s a reason why guys named me T-ball when they step up to the plate they never strike-out”. Relating to the theme of the episode which was clearly looking at things such as sexual preferences and women representation.
