This episode sees the comeback of Charlotte Richards, the human vessel for Lucifer’s actual mother. He seeks answers from her about her past behavior and the things she’d said to him in the past, but it would seem that his mother had left the body, leaving a fully human Charlotte in her place. She wakes up with no memory of the past few months, wondering why she is suddenly divorced and no contact with her children. She confesses to Lucifer, later in the episode, that while she had no memory of what she had apparently done – because Lucifer’s mom took over her body to wreak havoc on Lucifer’s life – she had felt like she had been in hell. Lucifer mused that that is most likely where she had been, and she confesses that she doesn’t want to go back. She is a career woman, a lawyer, who fights for her clients, even if they were guilty of terrible things. She comes to the conclusion that she must change her ways or else she’ll end up going back. Most of the episode is meaningless, but what matters is how Lucifer is feeling. It would seem that he has mommy issues on top of his daddy issues, what with God expelling him from heaven to hell for eons. Unfortunately for Lucifer, he can’t find any of the answers to his endless questions as Charlotte Richards is human now with no memory of what his mother did in her body. There aren’t a lot of easy to see examples in this episode, but we can see that Lucifer is struggling with not knowing. I would say that this trait is characteristic to both men and women, that it is simply a human way of thinking. Lucifer is concerned about Charlotte’s well-being throughout the episode, as she goes off on her own to make sure her clients weren’t involved in the episode’s murder, which is highly uncharacteristic of him. If you had seen anything of the previous Charlotte Richards, you would know that she was a thorn in Lucifer’s side the whole time who strung him along with unquestionable truths and made him doubt his role in the universe. You know, because they are immortal, godly creatures, it isn’t a “world” concept, it is a “universe” concept. Lucifer normally could care less about his mother as she loved to lie to him, but this episode sees a new side of Lucifer caring for a mere vessel of someone who is close to him. He is looking for big answers to his big questions, which confuses him greatly that he can’t and seemingly won’t get these answers. For now…

Every episode in this season shows more and more faces of Lucifer’s elusive character and gives background evidence as to why he is the way he is. This episode shows us that aside from his uncertainty as to whether he is good or evil, or if he is as much of a man as any other, he struggles with the missing roles of his parents in his life and craves their acceptance and for them to help push him in the right direction. Lucifer is a man of many faces that can go in any direction, the question is more about which face to put on and which direction is the correct one? It would seem that to be a man, Lucifer thinks he must be wholly good to be deserving of good things. Until he realizes that he is better than he views himself, he will continue to sabotage every good thing that comes his way and laugh it off.
