In this 2020 edition of Inside HokieSports, Virginia Tech football athletes, Tre Turner and Divine Deablo are presented on the cover in a very stereotypical male fashion. The two following ways show how this kind of pattern is represented:

A Sex Role Perspective
  1. Active Role
    • In this image, both players are making direct eye contact with the camera. This engages the audience with their eyes and shows a concept of power and influence. These are characteristics that are commonly associated with male figures and enact a type of male gaze that is captivating the viewers.
  2. Body Orientation
    • In addition to an active role, the way in which these athletes are positioned also increases stereotypical characteristics correlated with men. Turner and Deablo have crossed arms in a power position which represent a more confident and authoritative persona. Again, these are two traits that are more likely associated with men rather than women.
