Andrew Paxton in “The Proposal” is a masculine male character according to his traits from the Bem Sex Role Inventory. Aside from the beginning of the film when Andrew behaves yieldingly to his boss, Margaret Tate, for the sake of his job, he possesses only masculine characteristics. He easily chooses to engage in a fraudulent marriage with Margaret in order to be promoted, coming up with the scheme of a promotion when put on the spot in the immigration office. Andrew weighs the possibility of being discovered in the lie and potentially imprisoned, choosing to take the risk in order to achieve his ambitions goal of becoming an editor.

Upon Andrew and Margaret’s trip to Alaska to visit his family, Andrew proves himself to be a very assertive person with both his fiancĂ© and with his father, who continually harasses him about everything from his relationship to his career, and even the impact that Andrew’s choices have had on their family. Andrew defends his beliefs and refuses to be swayed by his father. He wants to be his own person, independent from the Paxton empire offered to him in Alaska.
