Seth in the movie “Superbad” is portrayed as both masculine and feminine. He continually tries to prove himself to be a sort of “alpha male” in the way he talks to his best friend Evan and their friend Fogell. He gets aggressive over very minuscule things, yelling whenever he is upset and blaming his problems on others. When it comes to actual bullies, like the classmate who spit in Seth’s face at the beginning of the film, Seth does nothing to defend himself and blames it on Evan for not sticking up for him. In an effort to impress Jules, Seth agrees to buy alcohol for her party despite being only eighteen years old.

Seth’s childlike behavior and shyness are the only inherently feminine qualities that he possesses. He constantly makes immature jokes and fumbles when he talks to Jules. Most of Seth’s “feminine” characteristics are just anti-masculine and not necessarily listed in the inventory as belonging to the feminine side of the spectrum. Seth is not athletic. He is overweight and performs poorly in gym class. He is unable to take a stand and acts as a lousy leader – forcing his friends into bad situations and panicking when things go wrong.
