Molly in the movie “Booksmart” is a female protagonist with all masculine characteristics from the Bem Sex Role Inventory. Her most obvious trait is her competitiveness. She spent her high school career focusing on academics and avoiding trouble so that she could get into the college of her dreams. When Molly discovers that all of her classmates who partied in high school are also going to prestigious colleges, she is enraged and becomes determined to party before graduation. She persuades her best friend Amy to join her on a search for a good time.

Amy is portrayed as the more submissive friend while Molly is very dominant. She forces Amy outside of her comfort zone, dragging her around the city from party to party until they find the one that she’s looking for. Molly goes so far as calling “Malala” – a code used between the friends that forces the other to do as the other commands. She uses this Malala card when Amy wants to back out of the scheme to find a party.
