In this image of multiple Super Bowl MVPs, the 2020 Sports Illustrated issue represents both stereotypical traits of men in addition to how these individuals are possibly defying a stereotype as well.

A Sex Role Perspective
  1. Assertive Stances
    • Each of these men are in powerful and self-assured positions. By doing this, the audience is under the impression that these men possess a level of confidence and authority. In addition, it represents the stereotype of success and accomplishment.
  2. Well-Dressed
    • To build upon the bread-winning image of these men with their body position on this cover, the professional dress, in sleek suits, also adds to this stereotypical view. It provides the idea that men are the wealthy ones who are able to achieve goals.

On the other hand…

  1. In many magazine covers, men are portrayed with straight faces. Many tend not to smile to show toughness and perceived intimidation. On this cover, all of these men are smiling and playing this active role that engages the audience in a warm and welcoming way. In this sense, these men are not embodying the some of the colder, bitter, or intense traits associated with men.
