This episode fails the Bechdel Test. Throughout, it is focused on the male characters in Breaking Bad. However, one scene, in particular, stood out to me. Walt, Skylar, and Walter Jr. are attending a cancer support group. Skylar starts to talk to Walt about how much she is worried about him, and how she is concerned with how little he shares with her about his diagnosis and treatment plan. There are many other women at the support group, but Skylar doesn’t speak to any of them, especially about anything other than Walt. Skylar’s showing of care and worry brings out the feminine traits of nurturing and compassion. She is concerned about her husband and is trying to tell him how he is hurting her as well. Even though she is upset, she tries to be as nurturing and helpful to Walt as possible to make sure he knows she is there for him. In another scene, her nurturing traits also come out. Walt is in for his cancer treatment, and he tells Skylar he doesn’t need her there. Walt tells Skylar she should be home for when Walter Jr. gets home from school, but she tries to stay and console him. When she does end up leaving, she tells him to “call him when she’s finished” because she is just a nurturing and compassionate person.
